Your Guide to Beautiful Newborn Photos and a Stress-Free Session

Preparing for Your Newborn Photography Session:
Congratulations on your little one’s arrival! I know how precious these early days are, and I’m so excited to help you capture them in a way you’ll cherish for years. As your photographer, my goal is to make sure you feel relaxed, confident, and ready for the session.
Here’s everything you need to know to prepare for your newborn photography session.
When to Book Your Session:
The best time for a newborn photo session is usually within the first two weeks of birth. This is when your baby is still extra sleepy and flexible, which allows us to capture those beautifully serene, curled-up poses. During this window, we can photograph all those tiny details—the soft folds in your baby’s skin, their tiny fingers and toes, and the peaceful moments when they sleep soundly.
Booking early ensures you secure a spot around your baby’s due date. While babies don’t always arrive exactly on time, I will keep flexibility in my schedule to accommodate the unpredictable nature of newborns, so you can be sure that we’ll find the perfect moment to capture your little one’s earliest days.
What to Expect During the Session:
Newborn sessions typically take place in the comfort of your home. This is one of the reasons I love lifestyle newborn photography—it allows us to create a relaxed, cozy environment where you and your baby can feel completely at ease. The session usually lasts between 2 to 3 hours, depending on how your baby is feeling.
You can expect the session to include lots of breaks for feeding, diaper changes, and soothing. I take my time to ensure your baby is comfortable and happy, so there’s no need to rush or worry if things don’t go exactly according to plan. We’ll work with your baby’s natural rhythms.
Preparing Your Baby for the Session:
I know the idea of getting everything just right can feel overwhelming, but trust me, the best thing you can do is keep your baby comfortable. Here are some tips for a smooth session:
Feed right before the session: A full baby is a happy baby! If you can, try to feed your baby just before the session. This will help them feel more content and sleepy during the shoot.
Dress in layers: Choose simple, soft layers for your baby—nothing too tight or restrictive. We’ll likely work with minimal clothing during the session, such as wraps or blankets, so something easy to remove is perfect.
Be ready for breaks: Babies need time to rest and relax, and this session will allow for that. If your baby needs a break, we’ll take it. There’s no rush, just focus on enjoying the moment!
What to include in the Session:
I’ll bring wraps and some simple accessories, but you are welcome to include special blankets, outfits, or anything that is meaningful. I love incorporating sentimental items into your session. Outfits for the family should be simple and neutral, we want the photographs to focus on your baby. Soft, solid colors, or delicate patterns work best. No need for anything too fancy. I want you to feel comfortable and natural.
Creating the Perfect Environment:
The beauty of an in-home session is that we’re working in a space that’s already familiar to you and your baby. We can do a few things to make sure the environment is perfect for your little one:
Keep the room warm: Newborns are sensitive to temperature, so make sure the house is warm and cozy. I recommend turning the thermostat up a few degrees. I may bring a space heater to ensure your baby is comfortable, especially during moments when they’re wrapped in just a blanket.
Where we will shoot: Please don’t worry about cleaning and preparing your whole house, you just had a baby, it’s okay if things are out of place. I recommend choosing just one or two rooms you would like the photos to take place in. Often, it is the nursery and living room. Master bedrooms, sunrooms, and even hallways with nice lighting are also great choices.
Let’s work with natural light: The best newborn photos are those that capture the soft, gentle light of the home. We’ll find a space with plenty of natural light—and use that to create warm, timeless images.
Keep things calm: A quiet, peaceful atmosphere is key to helping your baby feel at ease. We’ll keep things calm and stress-free, with minimal distractions.
Relax and Enjoy the Moment:
I want to capture your baby in the most authentic way possible while highlighting the love and emotion between you. My goal isn’t just to take photos but to create art that tells the story of your family. I strive for clean compositions that highlight your baby’s tiny features. I work with soft, neutral tones that create a timeless, bright style. Your photos will look just as beautiful in 20 years as they do today. Above all, I want you to enjoy this time with your baby. I’m here to guide you, and I’m honored to be a part of this special moment in your family’s journey.
